Description

An extra eyelid above the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait makes this 1936 Philadelphia Mint Wheat Cent one of the most recognizable doubled die varieties in the series — eyelid doubling creates immediate visual impact because it doubles a facial feature rather than lettering or numerals. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1936 1c WDDO-011, the die carries multiple secondary markers: on the obverse, a NE/SW die scratch crosses the top of the ear and continues inside the lower ear opening, with additional die scratches running southeast from the head near the eye. The reverse provides a complementary marker — a light curving die crack from the left wheat tip to the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. This combination of obverse die scratches around the ear plus the reverse die crack creates a thorough diagnostic framework. Eyelid doubling is particularly prized among Lincoln Cent DDO collectors because facial feature doubling stands apart from the more common motto or date doubling, and the doubled eyelid impression is one of the first features experienced examiners check when screening 1936 cents.
