1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
Error
Description
Tenth documented doubled die obverse for the 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-010 presents a distinctive diagnostic feature: extra eyelids visible above and below Lincoln's normal eyelid. This doubled die was created during the hubbing process when the working hub impressed the design into the working die with a slight vertical shift between impressions, doubling the fine eyelid detail while leaving broader design elements less noticeably affected. The eyelid area is one of the most sensitive zones for detecting hub doubling on Lincoln Cent obverses because the fine parallel lines of the eyelid and brow are closely spaced, making even minimal displacement visible under magnification. The die markers include an obverse die scratch running southwest-to-northeast at the top of the forehead and a reverse die scratch running south-southwest from the bottom of the T in CENT. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1936P-1DO-007, this variety has been documented in multiple cataloging systems, confirming its established status in the variety community. The 1936 Wheat Cent was produced during the depths of the Great Depression, a year that also saw the introduction of the Mercury Dime's final design refinements and the debut of several popular commemorative coins. Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation WDDO-010, this variety demonstrates that Lincoln's portrait on Victor David Brenner's century-old design continues to yield new doubled die discoveries that reward careful examination with magnification.
