1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
One of the strongest doubled die obverses in the Lincoln Wheat Cent series, the 1936 DDO-001 exhibits very strong spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date — a comprehensive distribution across nearly every raised obverse element. Cross-referenced as FS-101, this variety carries die markers UVC-1336 and DMR-003 with four documented die stages: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), Stage C in Mid Die State featuring a die crack across the lower bust and a die chip on that crack while the reverse reaches Late Mid Die State, and Stage D in Late Die State (unconfirmed). A distinctive manufacturing detail marks the first hubbing: the left leg of the R in LIBERTY was broken during the initial impression, an artifact preserved through subsequent hubbing steps. The FS-101 cross-reference and die number 14 place this variety in the primary tier of recognized 1936 doubled dies. The 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Philadelphia during the Great Depression. The Stage C crack-and-chip combination provides collectors with a built-in die state diagnostic.
