1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

Eighteenth Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-018 shows a close spread towards the center on the digits 36 in the date and on IN GOD WE TRUST. Two distinctive die markers characterize this die pair: on the obverse, a die scratch runs east-northeast from above the bowtie, and on the reverse, numerous die scratches trend north-south inside the C of CENT. No known cross-references exist, making the Wexler designation the sole published attribution. The centripetal spread on the date and motto resulted from a secondary hub impression that shifted inward, producing doubled outlines on the 3 and 6 and across the motto letters. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, paired with the wheat ear reverse, was in its twenty-eighth year during 1936, struck at Philadelphia during the Depression era on 95% copper planchets at 19mm. The die scratch above the bowtie and the cluster of scratches inside C on the reverse serve as confirmation markers.
