1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Bearing the primary DDO designation for the date, this 1936 Lincoln wheat cent is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1936 1¢ WDDO-001 and carries extensive cross-references: CONECA 1-O-IV, Cherrypickers' Guide FS-01-1936-101 (014), Breen 2135, Crawford CDDO-001, and Coppercoins 1936P-1DO-001. The doubling is a very strong Class IV spread to the southwest visible on the date, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the top of Lincoln's head, and Lincoln's ear. In Obverse Stage A, a circular die scratch at the rim runs clockwise from the eight o'clock position ending above the U of TRUST, and a die gouge on the upper back of the nose resembles some doubled eyelid varieties. Notably, the first hubbing came from a hub with a broken left leg on the R of LIBERTY. By Obverse Stage B, a die crack runs across the lower shoulder with a die chip at the center of the crack north of the VDB initials. No significant reverse markers have been noted in either stage. The breadth of cross-references reflects the importance of this variety among pre-war wheat cent doubled dies.
