1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013
Error
Description
Thirteenth in the obverse doubled die census for the 1936 Lincoln wheat cent, DDO-013 presents medium spread concentrated on the outside of the numeral 6 in the date — a single-digit diagnostic on Victor David Brenner's obverse where the date curves along the lower right of Lincoln's portrait. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1350 and DMR-017, documenting three die stages: Stage A where the obverse is at early die state with the reverse listed as DDR-003 also at EDS, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage A notation is particularly significant because the reverse is cross-listed as DDR-003 — establishing this as a dual-attribution die marriage where both obverse and reverse dies carry independent doubled die designations. The comments add two further details: "Full R in LIBERTY" describes the R retaining its complete serifs and details without the truncation seen on some die states, and the reverse DDR-003 listing is confirmed. Philadelphia struck approximately 309.6 million cents in 1936, a Depression-era recovery year when production volumes were climbing back toward pre-crash levels. Medium spread on the outside curve of the 6 places the diagnostic in a localized area where the secondary hub impression displaced the outer contour of the numeral, creating a widened or thickened curved stroke visible under moderate magnification. The 6 is an effective diagnostic element because its round form provides a smooth reference curve where even modest displacement registers as a measurable change in the digit's profile width. Dual-attribution die marriages (DDO plus DDR on the same coin) represent collecting opportunities where a single specimen documents hub misalignment events on two independent dies within the same die pair.
