Description

Leading the repunched mintmark census for the 1936-D Mercury dime, RPM-001 exhibits a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with secondary impressions displaced to the north and west of the final position. During this era, mintmarks were individually hand-punched into each working die using a small steel letter punch and mallet, and the process frequently required multiple blows or repositioning attempts before the letter seated properly in the die surface. Three distinct impressions of the D mintmark on this die — the primary plus two displaced ghosts — indicate the engraver lifted and repositioned the punch at least twice before achieving the intended placement. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime design, formally the Winged Liberty Head, placed the mintmark on the reverse at the lower left near the fasces bundle, where the small letter occupies a recessed area that accommodates the hand-punching process. Denver struck approximately 16.13 million dimes in 1936, a mid-Depression production run that supplied commercial channels with circulating silver coinage. This variety carries the Fivaz-Stanton cross-reference FS-501, indicating recognition in the Cherry Pickers' Guide — the standard hobbyist reference for profitable die varieties — which significantly enhances collector awareness and market demand. The north and west displacement directions describe the positions of the secondary D impressions relative to the final punch: one sits above and another to the left, creating a clustered trio of overlapping D letters visible under 10-15x magnification on the reverse.
