1936-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with Universal Variety Code UVC-1364 and Die Marriage Record DMR-008, this 1936-D Lincoln Wheat Cent DDR-001 displays medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the upper wheat ears of the reverse design. The die stage documentation spans four identified stages: Stage A in Early Die State (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse shows Early-to-Mid Die State and the obverse progresses to Very Late Die State, Stage C at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage D at Late Die State (also unconfirmed). The confirmed Stage B pairing of an EMDS reverse with a VLDS obverse is diagnostically significant — it indicates that the obverse die was wearing substantially faster than the reverse die in this die marriage, which can occur when the obverse die absorbs more stress per strike due to design relief differences or die steel variations. The 1936-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint in the standard bronze alloy (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams, and Denver's 1936 mintage of 40,620,000 cents consumed a considerable number of working dies. As the first cataloged DDR for the 1936-D date, DDR-001 holds a primary position in the variety census for this issue.
