1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Cataloged as UVC-177, DMR-008, this 1936 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel exhibits a repunched mintmark with the D showing evidence of secondary positioning. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse in Mid Die State, and Stage C with both obverse and reverse in Late Die State. The Buffalo Nickel, designed by James Earle Fraser and struck from 1913 to 1938 in 75% copper and 25% nickel, featured a Native American portrait on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. Denver produced approximately 24 million nickels in 1936, a strong mintage reflecting economic recovery during the Depression's later years. Repunched mintmarks on Buffalo Nickels resulted from the hand-punching process at branch mints, where die preparers individually applied the D or S letter punch to each working die prior to use. RPM-007 is one of eight cataloged repunched mintmark varieties for the 1936-D, and the progression through all three die stages indicates this die saw full service from early production through retirement.
