1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

As the primary cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1936 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel, RPM-001 carries identifiers UVC-171 and die marriage DMR-002. The variety documents the first of many RPM listings attributed for this prolific D-mint date, resulting from the hand-punching process in which each working die received its mintmark individually from an engraver using a lettering punch and mallet. Denver struck 24.81 million Buffalo Nickels in 1936, one of the highest D-mint outputs in the entire series, which necessitated a large number of die pairs and created abundant opportunities for mintmark positioning variations. Fraser's Buffalo Nickel was entering its penultimate full year of production, with only 1937 remaining as a three-mint-facility issue before the series gave way to Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel design in 1938. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition remained standard.
