1935-S Typical Die Clash TDC-25C-1935S-01

Description

Catalogued as TDC-25C-1935S-01 in the MadDieClashes registry and discovered by Matthew Whitt, this 1935-S Washington Quarter is a die clash variety on an early silver example of the series. The 1935-S was struck at San Francisco in 90% silver; die clashes on coins this old have had decades of circulation to wear away the evidence, making well-preserved examples genuinely scarce. Although the die was subsequently abraded — standard mint practice to extend die life — enough transfer imagery survived for attribution. The obverse shows light clash marks from the perimeter of the eagle's wings visible in front of Washington's face, around the neck, and behind the head. The reverse retains much of Washington's portrait transferred within the eagle's wings — the characteristic mirror-image signature of a die clash event. Two die markers anchor identification: the reverse shows strong north-south abrasion lines throughout, and a prominent gouge is visible within the 3 of the date. The mintmark position also serves as a confirmatory marker. Attribution requires careful examination of 1935-S quarters under a loupe, with focus on the ghost portrait traces in the eagle's wing area.
