1935-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Exhibiting medium extra thickness across a broad range of reverse design elements, DDR-001 for the 1935 San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter shows doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the stems, and the wings of the heraldic eagle. Such widespread doubling affecting both lettering and design devices indicates a substantial misalignment between hubbing impressions during die manufacture. Cataloged by VarietyVista with tracking codes UVC-0038 and DMR-004, this variety has been tracked through three die stages. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state. Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed, leaving the full progression of this die's working life partially documented. The 1935-S Washington Quarter had a mintage of approximately 5.66 million pieces, the lowest of the three mints for that year, and San Francisco issues from the 1930s are generally more challenging to locate in higher grades. As the first cataloged doubled die reverse for this date and mint, DDR-001 establishes the primary reverse doubling variety for collectors of early Washington Quarter die varieties.
