Description

File lines visible in the field in front of Liberty's head profile mark VAM-1C on the 1935-S Peace Dollar, a variety discovered in 2017 and cataloged as II1 - B2a with an I-2 interest level and R-5 rarity. The file lines appear heaviest in front of the lips and chin, where die finishing work left linear impressions that the striking process transferred as fine raised lines in the coin's field. Obverse II1 designates the die pairing, while Reverse B2a carries its own diagnostic: a short horizontal die scratch between rays below the lower olive leaves. San Francisco produced 1,964,000 Peace Dollars in 1935, the final year of the series before a brief 1964-D revival was famously halted and all specimens melted. The R-5 rarity classification estimates 30 to 75 known examples, placing VAM-1C among the scarcer die marriages within this terminal date. File lines on coin dies result from the finishing process where Mint engravers used fine files and abrasive tools to smooth die surfaces after hubbing — occasionally, these polishing marks survived into production rather than being fully removed, transferring to struck coins as subtle raised linear patterns. Anthony de Francisci's Liberty portrait, with its wide field area in front of the face, provides ample space for such filing evidence to survive and be detected. The 1935-S Peace Dollar as a whole commands collector attention as the last regular-issue silver dollar prior to the Eisenhower series in 1971, and VAM varieties on this date benefit from that heightened interest.
