Error
Description
An S/S East variety from the San Francisco Mint, this 1935-S Buffalo Nickel RPM-009 was documented by VarietyVista and awaits specimen submission for new color, high-magnification digital photographs. Die markers UVC-162 / DMR-013: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS and a light die clash under chin at LDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die clash under the buffalo's chin indicates the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without an intervening planchet, transferring faint design traces. Designed by James Earle Fraser, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm. The 1935-S had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces, a moderate San Francisco output that sustained a reasonable die population. The eastward S displacement indicates the initial punch was placed slightly west of the intended position.
