Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Buffalo Nickel carries an S/S North displacement on James Earle Fraser's iconic bison-and-Native American design. Specimen submission is requested for new color, high-magnification digital photographs. Die markers UVC-157 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die clash through PLURIBUS and a light die clash under the chin at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die clash residue through PLURIBUS and under the chin documents a moment when obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse design elements. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1935-S had a mintage of 10.3 million, placing it among the moderate-production dates of the Buffalo series.
