1935-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1935-S RPM-003 Buffalo Nickel is from the final decade of James Earle Fraser's iconic bison and Native American design (1913-1938). Die markers UVC-156 / DMR-007 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with a die gouge from the plain southeast to the upper F of FIVE and the obverse at MDS; Stage C with both reverse and obverse at MDS. The gouge extending from the bison's standing ground toward FIVE documents a significant surface defect. Struck at San Francisco in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter, the 1935-S had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million. The S mintmark sits beneath FIVE CENTS on the reverse, where manual punch application occasionally produced the positioning variations documented in RPM varieties.
