1935-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Buffalo Nickel from 1935 carries a repunched S mintmark beneath the FIVE CENTS denomination on Fraser's bison reverse. Die markers: UVC-155, DMR-006. Stage A: Meandering die scratches under FIVE and through mintmark — EDS; obverse is EDS. Stage B: Reverse and obverse are MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The meandering die scratches through the mintmark zone at EDS provide a distinctive early-state marker independent of the RPM itself, likely from die finishing operations. Composed of 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm), the 1935-S had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces, with each die receiving its S mintmark by manual punch application.
