1935 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Light hub doubling spread visible on GOD WE TRUST distinguishes this fourth documented doubled die obverse for the 1935 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter. Attributed by VarietyVista as DDO-004, the variety shows the subtle but diagnostic extra thickness on select motto letters that results from a slight misalignment between hub impressions during die manufacture. Die markers include UVC-0029 and DMR-005, with three documented die states: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing both obverse and reverse in late die state. The Washington Quarter series, designed by John Flanagan and introduced in 1932, was still in its early years by 1935, and doubled dies from the first decade of production are of particular interest to series specialists. Philadelphia struck over 32.4 million quarters in 1935 — a healthy production figure that generated substantial die consumption. While DDO-004 exhibits lighter spread than the strongest known doubled dies in the series, its presence on the motto makes it identifiable under careful examination. Collectors should focus on the GOD WE TRUST lettering where the doubling is most apparent.
