Description

Fifth cataloged rim cud for the 1935 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat cent, CU-1C-1935D-05R dates from the depths of the Great Depression — a period when the Mint maintained coin production to support the economy even as commercial activity contracted. Denver's mid-1930s cent output served a nation struggling with unemployment, bank failures, and deflation, yet the physical process of striking coins continued with the same mechanical realities governing production since 1909. Five documented cuds for the 1935-D date indicates meaningful die distress, suggesting that production volume or striking conditions generated enough accumulated stress to fracture rims on at least five distinct working dies. Each cud in the sequence represents a unique die failure, identified and cataloged by the Cuds on Coins research team through careful comparison of fracture location, geometry, and extent. Depression-era Wheat cents, including cud varieties, were often saved by a public that hoarded even small denominations during times of economic uncertainty, which may explain why varieties from this period sometimes survive in better condition than their mintage and circulation history might suggest.
