1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0467 with die marker reference DMR-020, this 1934 Washington Quarter exhibits a light spread on LIBE of LIBERTY. This is a combination variety: the obverse is identified as ODV-003, the Strong Motto variety characterized by bolder IN GOD WE TRUST lettering than standard 1934 dies — making this a doubled die on a Heavy Motto obverse. Three die stages are documented: Stages A and B remain unconfirmed, while Stage C in Late Die State shows a die crack across the forehead and hair extending into the field under Y of LIBERTY, along with a die crack down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. These late-state diagnostics provide additional confirmation markers for worn specimens where the primary doubling may be difficult to detect. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design debuted in 1932, making 1934 an early date in the series. Philadelphia Mint, 90% silver composition at 6.25 grams. The intersection of the Heavy Motto hub variety (ODV-003) with doubled die characteristics creates a die marriage of particular interest to Washington Quarter specialists who track both obverse die varieties and hub doubling anomalies.
