Description

Photographed by John Bordner for the Wexler RPM Files, the 1930-S WRPM-016 is a repunched mintmark variety on the Lincoln Wheat cent from the San Francisco Mint, submitted by David Goff. The obverse exhibits several notable die markers: die scratches running east from the throat, die scratches extending east from the bottom of the bow tie, a long die gouge above GOD, and east-west die scratches beginning at the D of GOD running through WE and the first T in TRUST. No distinctive reverse die markers were noted. This variety is cataloged under the Wexler designation 1930-S 1¢ WRPM-016. Repunched mintmarks on Lincoln cents from this era occurred when the mintmark punch was applied to the working die more than once, with the second impression slightly offset from the first. The 1930-S Wheat cent was struck during the early years of the Great Depression, when mintages dropped sharply as economic contraction reduced the demand for new coinage. The abundance of obverse die scratches and gouges on this particular die suggests it saw considerable use or experienced rough handling during its preparation, and the examination was conducted on a circulated specimen.
