1930-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011
Error
Description
Cataloged in the Wexler RPM Files under 1930-S 1¢ WRPM-011, with variety photography by John Bordner, this repunched mintmark variety is one of a cluster of sequentially cataloged entries for the 1930-S Lincoln Wheat Cent. The San Francisco Mint's mintmark application procedure in the 1930s used a separate punch for each working die, with the punch driven into the softened die surface using a hammer and positioning tools. Despite the tools available, the subjective element of hand-placement meant that no two dies produced an identically positioned S. Where a punch was driven more than once — whether to deepen a shallow initial impression or to correct a misalignment — a repunched mintmark resulted. WRPM-011 documents one such event, with its secondary punch offset preserved in Bordner's reference photographs. The 1930-S is a recognized scarce date, and WRPM-011 shares the low-mintage host characteristic with all other 1930-S RPM entries in the Wexler catalog. Collectors targeting this variety should compare directly against Bordner's photographs to distinguish WRPM-011 from the adjacent WRPM-010 and WRPM-012 entries.
