1930-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4, WRPM-005 of the 1930-S Lincoln wheat cent displays a strong secondary mintmark impression visible in the earlier die state. Two distinct die stages have been documented. Stage A shows the full secondary mintmark along with a die gouge on the bust at the beginning of the lapel area, die scratches running southeast from the bust that are stronger toward the front, and a dished mark between the RI of PLURIBUS on the reverse. Stage B presents a weaker secondary mintmark that no longer shows the upper curve, with the bust scratches considerably diminished and the reverse die marker also weakened. This progressive weakening of both the repunched mintmark and the die markers across stages reflects normal die wear during production. The 1930-S Lincoln cent had a mintage of just over 866,000 pieces, making it one of the lower-mintage issues of the wheat cent era. Repunched mintmark varieties from San Francisco during this period document the hand-punch process used before master-die mintmark placement.
