1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1195, DMR-010, this 1930 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the S/S positioned to the Northwest. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Repunched mintmarks occurred when the mint mark punch was applied more than once to a working die in slightly different positions, a consequence of the hand-punching method used at all branch mints during this era. Struck in 95% copper at the San Francisco Mint during the onset of the Great Depression, the 1930-S Wheat Cent saw reduced mintages as economic contraction lowered the demand for circulating coinage. The S/S Northwest repunch direction means the initial S punch landed slightly to the southeast before correction. San Francisco continued producing Lincoln Cents throughout the Depression years, though at sharply reduced volumes compared to the prosperous 1920s, making certain 1930s S-mint varieties scarcer in higher grades.
