1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

An S/S North variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks progressive die deterioration across four stages. Die markers UVC-1188 / DMR-008: Stage A features a die scratch south from L of LIBERTY and a light die gouge at the lower left second U of UNUM at EDS. Stage B shows a light die crack from V.D.B. west to rim at EMDS with reverse at EMDS. Stage C exhibits a rim-to-rim die crack over V.D.B. at MDS with reverse at MDS. Stage D is LDS (unconfirmed). The rim-to-rim crack at Stage C documents severe structural fatigue through the designer's initials area. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm during the early Depression, the 1930-S had a mintage of approximately 24.3 million pieces. Each San Francisco working die received its S through manual punch application before entering service.
