1930 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Listed in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherrypickers' guide as FS-102, this 1930 Philadelphia Mint Buffalo Nickel doubled die obverse shows strong spread on the Indian's eyelid and lower vertical feather — areas where the doubling is most visible to the naked eye and under low magnification. Three die stages are documented through die markers UVC-101 and DMR-005: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid-Die State where both obverse and reverse are confirmed, and Stage C at Late Die State where remnants of a die clash appear under the chin and through E PLURIBUS UNUM. The die clash evidence in Stage C reveals that this die was involved in a clashing incident — where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet, transferring ghost images of each design onto the other. The combination of doubled die obverse and die clash on the same die creates a multi-feature variety of particular interest. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the FS-102 Cherrypickers' listing elevates this variety to one that mainstream collectors and dealers actively seek beyond the specialized die variety community.
