1929-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1929-S Mercury Dime carries a doubled die obverse cataloged as WDDO-002, displaying a spread towards the center on the date digits. Adolph Weinman's iconic Winged Liberty design, widely known as the Mercury Dime, was entering its fourteenth year of production in 1929, and the San Francisco Mint struck approximately 4.73 million dimes that year. Obverse die markers include a die gouge running northwest from the left side of the R in LIBERTY, a die gouge northeast of the designer's initials, and a die crack running from the bonnet to the rim to the left of the T in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die gouge above the M in DIME and additional die gouges below the R and C in AMERICA. The die crack from bonnet to rim indicates this die had begun to develop fatigue fractures during its production run, and collectors may find specimens in varying stages of crack progression. The centripetal spread on the date provides the primary attribution point for WDDO-002, best confirmed under magnification.
