1929-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1929-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002 on the Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a medium spread on the 9 of the date and the U of TRUST. The Lincoln Wheat Cent, designed by Victor David Brenner, was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter. Die markers are UVC-3450 and DMR-005, with four documented die states tracking the die's entire working life: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse at Early to Mid Die State, Stage C showing a die crack from the lower 9 extending to the vest at Late Mid Die State with the reverse also at LMDS, and Stage D at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The progression from EDS through LDS provides collectors with a roadmap for placing their individual specimens within the die's production sequence. The 1929-S had a mintage of 50,148,000, and while the date is common, this doubled die variety with its visible spread on the date and trust motto adds numismatic significance beyond the base issue.
