1929-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The 1929-D Buffalo Nickel RPM-001 is documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-089 and DMR-002. The mintmark displacement is D/D Southwest — the primary D punch was entered and a second punch applied to the northeast, leaving the initial southwest impression visible as a secondary remnant below and to the left of the accepted mintmark position. The Buffalo Nickel, designed by James Earle Fraser and produced from 1913 through 1938, carries the mintmark on the reverse below the denomination. The copper-nickel composition and the deeply recessed bison design of the reverse created ongoing die-wear challenges at all three mints, and mintmark repunching on Denver issues of the late 1920s reflects the hand-application practices still in use at that time.
