Description

Second documented repunched mintmark on the 1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter, this variety shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S displaced to the northwest in a wide and tilted configuration. The "wide and tilted" characterization indicates that the secondary impression is significantly displaced from the primary and oriented at an angle, producing a dramatic repunching effect that may be detectable with a quality loupe rather than requiring microscope-level magnification. The mintmark style is classified as MMS-002 (Large), identifying the physical mintmark punch used as the large S variant — an important diagnostic because the San Francisco Mint used mintmark punches of different sizes across production years, and tracking which size was used helps establish die preparation chronology. The 1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint in the second-to-last year of the series before its replacement by John Flanagan's Washington Quarter in 1932. Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design, with its elegant representation of Liberty bearing a shield, is one of the most admired twentieth-century coin designs.
