1928-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

San Francisco Mint operations in 1928 produced their own distinct pattern of repunched mintmarks, and this sixth documented RPM for the date (Wexler Variety ID: 1928-S 1¢ WRPM-006) illustrates the differences between S-mint and D-mint hand-punching tendencies. The S mintmark punch had a different shape and serif structure than the D, and San Francisco engravers developed their own techniques for positioning it on working dies. With at least six documented RPMs, the 1928-S cent demonstrates that mintmark placement inconsistencies were endemic to the branch mint system rather than isolated to any single facility. The 1928-S Lincoln Wheat Cent had a mintage of 17.27 million — lower than many Philadelphia issues but substantial enough to require numerous die pairs, each needing an individually applied mintmark. Repunched mintmarks from the late 1920s predate the widespread collector awareness that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, meaning many examples circulated unnoticed for decades before the attribution infrastructure existed to catalog them.
