Description

Documented from a circulated specimen, WRPM-005 on the 1928-S Lincoln wheat cent records a D/D Southeast repunched mintmark — notably using the D/D notation despite being an S-mint coin, which in the original source data likely reflects a transcription convention or error in the source description, as the coin is definitively a San Francisco issue. The Wexler Team cataloged this as Wexler Variety ID: 1928-S 1c WRPM-005, with no other known cross-references. A small mintmark is noted on the obverse, but no die markers were visible on either side due to the circulated condition of the examined specimen — a common limitation in variety documentation when the available examples have experienced sufficient wear to obliterate the fine die polish lines, scratches, and gouges that serve as secondary diagnostics on mint-state coins. San Francisco produced approximately 17.3 million wheat cents in 1928, a relatively modest output that places the date among the lower-mintage San Francisco wheat cents of the late 1920s.
