Description

Cataloged as UVC-023, DMR-006, this 1928 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark where traces of the initial S punch placement remain visible alongside the corrected position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Hand-applied mintmarks on Lincoln Wheat Cents frequently resulted in positional errors when the punch landed off-target on the first strike, requiring correction that left diagnostic evidence of the original impression. Struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at the San Francisco Mint, the 1928-S Wheat Cent comes from an era when San Francisco production supplemented Philadelphia and Denver output. Repunched mintmark varieties from the late 1920s document the continued reliance on manual mintmark application, a process that would persist for decades before the Mint transitioned to including mintmarks directly on the master die.
