1928-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
The 1928-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-002 is a repunched mintmark variety cataloged with die marker codes UVC-021 and DMR-004, traceable across three distinct die stages. In Stage A the secondary mintmark impression is visible both North and South of the primary S, the clearest presentation of the dual-direction repunch. As the die wore into Stage B, only the southward ghost impression persisted, with the reverse recorded as mid-die state. By Stage C both obverse and reverse had reached late die state. Identifying this variety requires a loupe aimed at the S mintmark: the simultaneous north-and-south ghost marks on early examples are the most dramatic presentation. The 1928-S had a relatively modest mintage compared to Philadelphia issues of that era, giving RPM varieties added collector appeal. Die marker codes UVC-021 and DMR-004 provide systematic references for attributers working with photographic comparisons. Victor David Brenner's wheat-ear cent design, in production since 1909, renders the S mintmark in the lower right of the reverse, making repunch details accessible at standard 5x–7x magnification.
