Holding the primary RPM designation for the 1928-D Standing Liberty quarter, RPM-001 shows a D/D mintmark with the secondary impression displaced north of the primary — the first documented repunched mintmark for this late-series date in Hermon MacNeil's acclaimed quarter dollar design. The Standing Liberty quarter (1916-1930) underwent a significant redesign in 1917 that recessed the date into the design field and modified Liberty's appearance, but the basic composition and production methods remained consistent through the series' end. Denver struck approximately 1.63 million quarters in 1928, a modest mintage that places this date among the more accessible later issues while still commanding attention from collectors who recognize the series' overall scarcity compared to modern coinage. Repunched mintmarks occurred because branch mint die preparation required individual hand-punching of the mintmark letter into each working die — a process where the first impression might land slightly off target, necessitating a corrective second blow that partially obliterated but did not completely eliminate the initial placement. The northward displacement of the secondary D means the first impression landed slightly below the final position, and vestiges of that initial placement remain visible beneath the primary mintmark as a shadow or extra base serif extending downward. The mintmark on Standing Liberty quarters appears on the obverse, to the left of the date, making it readily accessible for examination without flipping the coin. Collectors should examine the D mintmark under 15-20x magnification with lighting angled from the south to accentuate any remnants of the secondary impression below the primary D — traces of extra serifs or a faint outline displaced downward from the final mintmark position confirm the repunching.
