1928-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Among the scarcest host coins to carry a doubled die variety, DDR-001 on the 1928-D Standing Liberty Quarter shows light spread on the lower three stars and LLAR of DOLLAR — the final four letters of the denomination word. Robert H. Knauss reported this variety. Hermon A. MacNeil's reverse design features an eagle in flight with a configuration of thirteen stars arranged in arcs below and beside the eagle, and the "lower three stars" indicates the doubling concentrates on the bottommost group within this patriotic arrangement. The selective involvement of LLAR rather than the full word DOLLAR suggests the hub displacement direction produced its strongest visible effect on the rightward portion of the denomination inscription, with D-O-L showing insufficient offset for detection. Struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams, the 1928-D was produced at the Denver Mint during the final years of the Standing Liberty Quarter series, which ended in 1930 when it was replaced by Washington's portrait. DDR-001 as the primary doubled die reverse for this date-mint underscores the relative scarcity of cataloged Standing Liberty Quarter varieties compared to later series — the shorter production run and lower collector base during the early attribution era resulted in fewer documented examples.
