1928-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-II, the 1928-D Mercury Dime WDDO-002 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling that produces spread towards the center on the date digits. Class II doubling, caused by a slight rotational offset between successive hub impressions, creates centripetal displacement where design elements appear to shift inward — on the date, this manifests as thickened or slightly displaced numerals visible under magnification. The obverse die marker is a small die gouge located above the U in TRUST, while the reverse carries a distinctive SW-to-NE die scratch between the E in DIME and the adjacent star, providing two independent confirmation points for attribution. The 1928-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint during the middle years of Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, and doubled die varieties on Mercury Dimes are actively pursued by collectors of this classic early 20th-century series. The combination of date doubling and clear die markers on both sides makes WDDO-002 a variety that can be confidently attributed once both the doubling and the secondary diagnostics are confirmed.
