1927-P VAM-1C
ErrorDescription
Discovered in 2015, the 1927-P VAM-1C "Die Break R" Peace dollar documents a radial die crack extending from the rim to the top of Liberty's head at the left side of the R in LIBERTY, accompanied by a displaced field break on Anthony de Francisci's obverse design. Cataloged as 1C II1 - B2a (Die Break R) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-6 (approximately 13-30 known), this variety records a significant die failure where the crack originates at the rim — the highest stress point on any die — and propagates inward to the crown area of the portrait. Philadelphia struck approximately 848,000 Peace dollars in 1927, one of the lowest mintages in the entire series, making any documented variety for this key date inherently desirable to VAM collectors. The displaced field break indicates that the die's condition progressed beyond a simple hairline crack: the metal adjacent to the fracture shifted under repeated striking pressure, creating a raised step on struck coins visible at the R in LIBERTY and extending toward the rim. Die breaks originating at the rim and running radially inward toward the portrait are characteristic of late-stage die fatigue, where the cumulative thermal and mechanical stress of hundreds of thousands of striking cycles has exceeded the steel's endurance limit. The low mintage of the 1927-P date means fewer total dies were required, and the R-6 rarity (13-30 known) suggests this particular die was pulled from service relatively quickly after the break developed. Collectors should examine the area at and below the R in LIBERTY under 10-15x magnification, tracing the crack from the rim toward Liberty's crown and looking for the displaced field break where surface elevation changes across the fracture line.
