Holding the primary RPM designation for the 1927-D Standing Liberty quarter, RPM-001 exhibits a D/D mintmark with the secondary impression tilted west of the primary — the first documented repunched mintmark for this date in Hermon MacNeil's quarter dollar design. Standing Liberty quarters (1916-1930) rank among the most artistically accomplished and eagerly collected designs in American coinage, and the 1927-D represents one of the later dates in the series, struck just three years before the transition to John Flanagan's Washington quarter in 1932. Denver produced approximately 976,000 Standing Liberty quarters in 1927, making it a scarce date with a mintage well below one million — a production level where every documented variety carries heightened collector interest due to the limited pool of surviving coins available for examination. Repunched mintmarks on Standing Liberty quarters occurred when the mintmark punch was applied to the working die, removed, and then impressed again at a slightly different position or angle. The westward tilt of the secondary D means the initial impression was placed slightly to the left of where the final D sits, and the remnants of the first punch remain visible as a ghost image displaced in that direction. The mintmark on Standing Liberty quarters appears on the obverse, to the left of the date, positioned where it is readily visible for examination. Collectors should use 15-20x magnification focused on the D mintmark, looking for traces of a secondary D impression displaced to the west (left when viewing the coin) of the primary — manifesting as extra serifs, thickened edges, or a faint shadow of the initial placement that the final punch did not fully obliterate.
