Description

1925-S VAM-1D Die Gouge Left of U in UNITED 1D II1 - B2a (Die Gouge Left of U in UNITED) I-2 R-5 Obverse II1 - Different die than VAM-1C without die gouge between IB. Reverse B2a - Same die as for VAM-1C but earlier die state with vertical thin die gouge to left of U in UNITED. Comments: A Short History of the VAM-1D: The VAM-1D was originally described as having a gouge in the rays on the obverse. The VAM-1C had been previously described as having the reverse gouge. Then, it was noticed that all of the coins with the obverse gouge also had the reverse gouge. It was assumed that VAMs 1C and 1D were the same and VAM-1D was eliminated. Thus, VAM-1C became the variety with both gouges. Then, Leroy was shown a specimen with only the reverse gouge. This became the new VAM-1D described here. On the 1D obverse, there is a small dot near the top of the neck groove. This is in a similar position to, but larger than, the dot on the VAM-6.
