1925-S VAM-1C2
Error
Description
Originally discovered in 2013 and redesignated from VAM-1J to VAM-1C2 in 2017, this 1925-S Peace Dollar is classified as II1 – B2a (Die Break Neck) with an impact rating of I-2 and a rarity of R-6. The obverse (II1) exhibits a horizontal die crack running across the lower front of Liberty\'s neck and extending over to above the numeral 1 in the date, with a displaced field break at the neck where the fractured die surface shifted under striking pressure, creating a raised or depressed zone adjacent to the crack line. The displaced field break at the neck area is particularly significant because it occurs in a high-relief portion of the design where the die steel is thinnest and most susceptible to structural failure. Community commentary from a collector identified as JB provides additional die state information: two specimens were observed simultaneously showing a thick crack above PEACE, a crack through the mintmark and the O in ONE, and a vertical soft gouge in the field below the U in UNITED — extensive die deterioration markers that may represent a later die state than the catalog\'s primary description captures. Anthony de Francisci designed the Peace Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1925 in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The 1925-S had a mintage of approximately 1.61 million pieces, making it one of the scarcer Peace Dollar date-mint combinations. The R-6 rarity rating confirms limited surviving specimens with clear attribution, and the variety\'s redesignation from VAM-1J to VAM-1C2 reflects the ongoing cataloging refinements within the VAM system as new die state information accumulates.
