Description

This 1925 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a rim cud on the reverse at 3:00. The break sits along the right edge of the reverse in the area of the wheat stalk and AMERICA, where the fractured rim section separated from the die and left a cavity that filled with bronze under striking pressure. The resulting raised, featureless area obscures the rim and the adjacent design. Rim failures begin as fatigue cracks that nucleate at the die edge, where striking forces concentrate as the raised rim forms against the collar, and propagate through the hardened steel until a section detaches entirely. Position and angular width distinguish this break from the other San Francisco rim failures cataloged for the date, since each failed die produces a cud whose outline functions as a fingerprint for that specific die.
