RCD-1c-1925D-02R Retained Cud

Description

Produced at the Denver Mint during the Roaring Twenties, this retained cud on a 1925-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is the second documented retained cud die break for this date. The "R" suffix indicates the retained cud appears on the reverse. A retained cud differs from a full cud in that the fractured piece of die rim remains partially attached rather than falling away completely, producing a raised distorted area along the coin's edge that may retain some design detail. RCD-1c-1925D-02R is cataloged in the Cuds on Coins reference system and is also cross-referenced as JCc-1925D_040 in the Jim Curto cent catalog. The 1925-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at the Denver Mint. Denver Mint Lincoln Cents from the mid-1920s were produced in moderate quantities, and die varieties from branch mints of this era often survive in smaller numbers than Philadelphia counterparts. This variety was documented by the Cuds on Coins reference. Collectors can distinguish this -02R from the -01 by comparing cud position against published reference images.
