Description

Sole documented cud for the 1924 Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break records a complete rim fracture from a year of modest cent production during the Roaring Twenties. The 1924 Philadelphia Mint struck approximately 75.2 million cents — a below-average output for the decade that resulted from sufficient existing supply in circulation channels. CU-1C-1924-01 in the Cuds on Coins catalog documents the only known instance of a die developing a full rim separation for this date. The single-cud status correlates with the lower production volume: fewer die pairs were needed to complete the mintage, reducing the statistical pool of dies that could develop rim fractures, and the smaller total coin population also limits the number of surviving specimens available for examination by researchers. When the die rim fractured and the separated piece created a void, each subsequent strike filled that void with planchet metal, building the raised featureless area at the coin's edge. The 1924 cent was struck in standard bronze composition at a time when Victor David Brenner's Lincoln design was entering its sixteenth year of production. As the only cud known for 1924, this variety carries particular significance for collectors assembling date-specific cud sets across the Wheat Cent series.
