Error
Description
Originally discovered in 2010 and redesignated as VAM-1BF2 in 2017, this San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar is classified as II1, B2a, rated I-3 R-6 for rarity. The variety documents Die File Lines on the Obverse with Shortened Front Three Rays. On the obverse, heavy die file lines appear in the fields where the Mint attempted to remove die cracks running from the hair bun to Y and from the neck to below a shallow GOD WE. The crack continues up to LI in LIBERTY, and aggressive polishing over-polished the front hair, shortening the first three long rays at their base. This filing and polishing evidence documents aggressive die maintenance aimed at extending the working life of a heavily cracked obverse die. The R-6 rarity rating indicates an estimated 13 to 30 surviving specimens. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1923-S Peace Dollar carries Anthony de Francisci's design with the distinctive TRVST spelling on the reverse. The shortened rays resulting from die polishing provide a distinctive diagnostic that distinguishes VAM-1BF2 from other 1923-S varieties.
