Description

Discovered by John Ginder in March 2007, the 1923-S VAM-1AS "Die File Lines Left Obverse" Peace dollar documents heavy die file lines positioned above the letters IN and below the L in LIBERTY on Anthony de Francisci's obverse design, applied by Mint personnel in an attempt to remove a developing die crack. Cataloged as 1AS II 1 B2a (Die File Lines Left Obverse) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-6 (estimated 13-30 known), this variety preserves forensic evidence of die maintenance intervention during the production life of a specific working die. San Francisco struck approximately 19.02 million Peace dollars in 1923, a robust mintage that placed continuous demands on working dies and occasionally required in-service repairs when dies developed cracks before reaching their expected end of life. The heavy file lines above IN and below L in LIBERTY represent the die sinker's attempt to grind away the visible crack by filing the die surface in the affected area — a repair technique that could extend a die's useful life by removing the surface expression of the crack, even though the underlying fracture in the die steel might continue to propagate. The file lines transferred as shallow incuse marks on struck coins, creating the visible diagnostic that John Ginder identified. The "heavy" characterization distinguishes these from the fine, barely perceptible file marks seen on many other varieties, indicating aggressive filing was required — consistent with an attempt to remove a substantial die crack rather than minor surface imperfections. At R-6 rarity, the limited number of known specimens suggests the repair may not have been entirely successful, with the die being retired relatively soon after the filing intervention. Collectors should examine the field above IN and below L under 15x magnification with angled lighting to reveal the linear file marks.
