Description

Cataloged following its discovery in 2010, the 1923-S Peace Dollar VAM-1AK2 is classified as II 1 - B2a with an I-2 impact rating and R-6 rarity, making it a scarce variety with an estimated surviving population of 13 to 30 pieces. The variety's descriptive name, Die Break Right Rays #2 with Shortened Reverse Rays, captures its key diagnostic features. Heavy die file lines appear at the left and right of Liberty's head on the obverse, evidence of die maintenance work performed during the die's service life. On the reverse, heavy die file lines are present at clash marks with shortened rays at the right olive sprig, indicating the die was polished to remove clash marks from an accidental contact between obverse and reverse dies. The shortened rays resulted from this aggressive die filing, which removed enough metal from the die surface to truncate the design at those points. San Francisco Peace Dollars from 1923 were produced in substantial quantity, but the R-6 rarity rating confirms that relatively few specimens from this particular die pair have survived.
