Description

Bearing the classification 1AA2 II 1 - B2a, this 1923-S Peace Dollar VAM-1AA2 was discovered by Lance Newman of the Online Coin Club (OCC) and documents die file lines on both the obverse and reverse combined with a die break below the letters IN. The die file lines represent evidence of Mint personnel filing the die surface, typically to remove clash marks or other defects before returning the die to service. The obverse shows the primary diagnostic: a die break running down from the L through IN to the rim below, accompanied by a small secondary die break at the rim. This progressive cracking through three adjacent letters and extending to the rim suggests significant die stress in this portion of the die face. Rated at I-2 for interest and R-6 for rarity, only an estimated 1 to 12 examples are believed to survive. The 1923-S Peace Dollar saw comparatively limited mintage from the San Francisco facility, and varieties carrying combined die file lines and die breaks are particularly uncommon because they represent two distinct categories of die modification occurring on the same working die. Collectors should look for the file line texture across both sides and the crack traversing from L through IN to the rim.
