Description

Bearing a distinctive X-shaped pattern of die scratches, the 1923-P VAM-1BD documents a Peace Dollar reverse die with two intersecting scratches forming an X shape below the eagle's right foot, between the talons. Classified as 1BD II1 with reverse die B2a (X Die Scratches Below Talons), rated I-2 for interest and R-6 for rarity (an estimated 301 to 1,000 surviving), this variety stands out for its unusually recognizable diagnostic. While single die scratches are common, two scratches intersecting at a precise point to form a clear X are far less typical, suggesting either two separate contact events or a single incident involving a crossed tool mark. The scratches appear below the eagle's talons — de Francisci's bald eagle perches atop a mountain with olive branches in its claws, and the area between the talons offers enough open field for the crossed marks to display clearly. The R-6 rarity estimate of 301 to 1,000 surviving specimens places this among the scarcer 1923-P varieties. Struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver at 38.1mm.
