Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1923 $1 WDDO-001, this Peace Dollar doubled die obverse is a significant variety within the Peace Dollar series (1921-1935). The doubling manifests prominently on the date, TRUST, and the bottom hair braid of Liberty's portrait, with additional slight doubling visible on the forehead and on designer Anthony de Francisci's initials. The obverse die carries a notable die crack running along the front of the base of the bust, providing a key secondary diagnostic for attribution. The reverse of this coin is itself a doubled die, listed separately in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1923 $1 WDDR-004, displaying a close spread on the olive leaves and on the rays below ONE — making this die pair doubly significant as both obverse and reverse dies exhibit hub doubling. The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, featuring a profile of Liberty wearing a radiate crown on the obverse and a perched eagle with olive branch on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, the coin weighs 26.73 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm and a reeded edge. The 1923 Philadelphia issue is one of the most common dates in the Peace Dollar series by mintage, yet doubled die varieties remain scarce finds regardless of overall production volume because they represent individual die anomalies. For attribution, the date doubling and TRUST doubling serve as the primary pick-up points under 5x to 10x magnification, with the obverse die crack along the bust base providing definitive die-specific confirmation.
